Last years pie was Steak and Stout and this years was a quicker, simpler (pregnancy) version courtesy of RachelAllen's lovely book Bake

Garlic roast potatoes

Push the soft, sweet garlic cloves out of their skins and eat with the crispy potatoes. Drain off the water and shake the potatoes around in the dry saucepan with the lid on (this roughens the surface of the potatoes to help make them crispier when roasting in the oven)

Skirt steak with spicy potatoes

For the spicy potatoes. bring a small pan of salted water to the boil and add the potatoes. Place a large frying pan over a high heat, pour in the olive oil and, when hot, add the potatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic, chillies and cumin seeds and cook for a further 3–5 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden-brown and crisp. 750 g potatoes, cut into 2cm dice. 4 cloves garlic, crushed or finely grated. 1 clove garlic, finely chopped

Add the potatoes and cook for 2. 5 minutes (floury potatoes will cook faster) until they have slightly softened, then drain before tipping onto kitchen paper to dry completely.
