The dates act like little toffee pieces in the gorgeous filling, and then the whole thing is topped with a warm, ultra-crunchy crumble topping – the trick is baking the topping separately before sprinkling it over the fruit
By cooking apples in a toffee sauce, and topping with a crunchy crumble, you get a mix of crumble and toffeeapples - two of the trademark tastes of winter
Because dates and sultanas are naturally sweet, you don't need to use as much sugar as you normally would in a crumble filling, and their caramel like sweetness goes very well with the tartness of the Bramley apples
Full of autumnal flavours this is perfect as the weather turns colder, I’ve bought the flavours and textures of a classic applecrumble and mixed them with an utterly amazing cheesecake…and boy does it work
For the filling, peel, core and chop the Bramley apples. In a separate bowl beat the quark, yogurt, brown sugar, cinnamon and eggs together in a bowl and stir in the apple mixture
Update. My healthy banana and oatmeal cookies are still a work in progress (watch this space) but I created this incredibly simple, healthy applecrumble recipe today as a follow up for Sunday lunch with the family
I may not have had the energy to bake all weekend, but after clearing out the fridge I found two packets of Philidelphia and a tub of double cream nearing their sell by date
In this cake, we have a little bit of fruit so that we can pretend it’s OK to eat at breakfast time, and it doesn’t get much more English than toffeeapples in autumn, does it
These ginger cookies would also love you for the addition of toffee too and this sister cake would be happy to accommodate some as a decoration or an add in
There are still plenty of apples left so I might make another batch of these no added sugar extra fruity muffins if I want to feel healthy or these bonfire toffeeapple muffins if I don't
You may be thinking that the world doesn’t need another applecrumble recipe but here’s where I share one that’s a tad different and super yummy – this fruit crumble will knock your socks off whilst still keeping its firm place with being one of the ultimate comfort food desserts
