Ingredients

  • 150 ml/5fl oz vegetable oil
  • 9 onions, diced
  • 1 kg/2lb 4oz bacon, diced
  • 2 kg/4lb 8oz self-raising flour
  • 1 kg/2lb 4oz suet, shredded
  • 140 g/5oz dried mixed herbs
  • sea salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1.3 litres/2¼ pints water
  • 6 kg/13lb potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 225 g/8oz butter
  • 500 ml/18fl oz milk
  • 115 g/4oz wholegrain mustard
  • 200 ml/7fl oz sunflower oil
  • 1 kg/2lb 4oz onions, chopped
  • 450 g/1lb plain flour
  • 15 beef stock cubes, dissolved in 2.8 litres/5 pints boiling water
  • 2.25 kg/5lb curly kale, stalks removed and leaves shredded
