Slow Cooked Sweet Onion Braised Beef

Ingredients

  • 600 g/21oz of braising steak, (an visible fat removed
  • 12 onions, quartered and sliced thinly
  • 11 tablespoon of brown sugar (3 syns) - or use maple syrup
  • 13 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 11 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • 11 tbs of cornstarch (or arrowroot or tapioca starch) (1.5 syns)
  • 13 tablespoons of tomato paste/puree
  • 12 cups/480ml of beef stock
  • 11 tbs of balsamic vinegar
  • 1 few drops of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 fresh chopped parsley to serve
  • 1 spray oilSpray a frying pan over a medium high heat with spray oil.
  • 1 Add the onion and garlic and fry till softened.
  • 1 Add the sugar and continue to fry until caramelized.
  • 1 Add to the slow cooker.
  • 1 Spray the frying pan again with a little spray oil and brown the beef.
  • 1 Add this to the slow cooker with all other ingredients (except cornstarch)
  • 1 Add all the ingredients to a slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours.
  • 1 Once cooked, remove beef with a slotted spoon and set aside.
  • 1 Mix cornstarch with a little water to make a paste.
  • 1 Add this into the gravy in the crockpot.
  • 1 Set to high for 15 mins until gravy thickens.
  • 1 Stir back in beef.
  • 1 Sprinkle with some fresh chopped parsley
  • 1 Serve with your choice of sides.
  • 1 Set instant pot to saute mode
  • 1 Spray with spray oil
  • 1 Add onion and garlic and fry till softened.
  • 1 Add brown sugar and fry till caramelized.
  • 1 Add beef and brown.
  • 1 Add other ingredients except cornstarch
  • 1 Set to stew/meat and then allow a Natural Pressure Release.
  • 1 spoon out beef with a slotted spoon and set aside.
  • 1 Whisk cornstarch with a little water to make a paste.
  • 1 Add this into gravy.
  • 1 Set to instant pot to saute and stir just till thickened
  • 1 Add back in beef and serve
