Whether eaten with ice cream or hot custard, a crumble takes moments to prepare, will bake quite happily without attention and is a joyous way to end any meal
I’ve tried a few different ways of making the crumbleand a few different ways of preparing the fruit – baked raw, stewed first, withandwithout sugar and spice and a squeeze of lemon here and some orange there
Pile the crumble on top of the blackberry & apples - I like to mound it up in the middle so the yummy, sticky juices bubble up around the sides - making the edges of the cooked crumble more tasty
Kipper and I went blackberrying in our local country park with some friends. This recipe creates a dense, moist cake with a fruity crumbly topping, which is delicious sliced and served with a cuppa, but is also fantastic served warm as a dessert (ideally with custard, cream or ice-cream
Not so long ago, I had a crumble which had a custard layer between the fruit and the crumble - and I have to say it was a very pleasant experience, which I think stops the fruit from making the bottom of the crumble a big soggy lump - so I have included a method for making your own custard to do the same - you don't have to do this, you can just serve custard on the side - or, of course, you can cheat and buy a couple of cartons of good quality thick custard, and use those in instead
I have to confess some evenings I have been just having bread with this jam as my dinner. We were chatting about picking blackberries and I said I got a notion to make a blackberrycrumble

I've slowly been getting through them by makingblackberryandapplecrumbles again and again (and they're easy to get through in a few days as they make such fabulous breakfasts as well as puddings), but I thought I might as well use them in something else
I thought I'd try making a crumblewith them for a dinner party. Mix with the blueberries and arrange, sprinkling with the demerara sugar, into a large casserole pan
A nice way to use some lovely blackberries that are in season at the moment, and a left-over bramley apple from the spiced apple, rum and pecan pie I made the other day
The first round of testing was making chicken fajitas, I bought some chicken thighs and trimmed and sliced them using the smallest Paring knife, which is normally a lengthy job and a bit fiddly
Despite my mum regularly makingcrumbles throughout my childhood, it’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve accepted anything other than a bowl of custard (yep, on it’s own)
We had a collection of blackberries hanging around after the kids went foraging and I was going to make a standardcrumble but then thought a nice appleandblackberry loaf topped with a crunchy crumble would go down a treat
Full of autumnal flavours this is perfect as the weather turns colder, I’ve bought the flavours and textures of a classic applecrumbleand mixed them with an utterly amazing cheesecake…and boy does it work
